Nifty 50, Sensex, Banknifty, Dow Jones, S&P 500 explained.
A market index is a basket of selected stocks that represents the overall market or a sector. Nifty 50 contains the top 50 companies on NSE. Sensex contains top 30 on BSE. They tell you if the market as a whole is going up or down. If Nifty is up 1%, it means the weighted average of top 50 stocks rose 1%.
